School Fees - Letter to Parents

School Fees - Letter to Parents

On March 2, 2017, the Alberta Government introduced Bill 1, An Act to Reduce School Fees.

If Bill 1 is passed, it will come into effect in the 2017/18 school year. Under this legislation, boards will not be able to charge fees for:

  • transportation for students who are attending their designated school and live more than 2.4 kilometres from the school; and
  • instructional supplies or materials, such as textbooks, workbooks, printing, and paper costs. This category will also include any common fees that are charged to an entire student body or grade cohort. I have seen school boards often refer to these fees as-among other titles-instructional fees, instructional materials, or basic fees.
