Changes to 2020-2021 School Calendar / COVID Symptom Update

Change to the 2020-2021 School Calendar - Holidays in November

The start to the 2020-2021 school year has been challenging for everyone. In conversations across the division, we’ve heard that our students, staff and parents are feeling the impact of the new realities that have come with operating under COVID-19 restrictions. We need to be prepared for the long haul with managing this pandemic which also means caring for ourselves so we can all remain healthy. For this reason, the board has made the decision to modify the school year calendar to provide an additional break for families and staff in conjunction with the Remembrance Day holiday. This means that November 11th, 12th and 13th will be holiday days for all students and staff.  We hope this provides an opportunity for everyone to relax and decompress.

The updated school calendars are now available online. There are a few different versions of the calendar this year to accommodate the needs of our schools, so make sure you are familiar with the one that fits your child's school.

Updated COVID-19 Symptom List for Under 18 Years of Age

We would also like to inform parents that changes have been made to the COVID-19 symptom list for those who are under 18 years of age.  This change takes effect on Monday, November 2, 2020. We have updated our Student Stay at Home Guide to reflect those changes.

The changes mostly impact the core symptom list and how long students with non-core symptoms need to stay home. Here are the highlights:

  • Loss of sense of smell or taste has been moved from non-core to the core symptom list.
  • All core symptoms still require a negative COVID test result or 10 days isolation (or longer if they still have symptoms).
  • Runny nose and sore throat are no longer on the list of core COVID symptoms.
  • If a child has only one (1) of the non-core symptoms, they only need to stay home for 24 hours and monitor their symptoms.
  • If a child develops a second non-core symptom, parents should use the online assessment tool to determine if a COVID test is recommended. Your child may not return to school until they no longer have symptoms.
